The Carving Place is the first in a three-part series that follows Lora Sinclair from her native Mississippi to new adventures in West Virginia. Sent to Appalachia to document customs comparable to those in Mississippi and the South, she finds carver Sam Wood and tries to balance her new-found love of the mountains with her deep loyalty to Sinclair Farm in Mississippi. You will find her friends Buck and Simsie to be delightful and endearing. Along the way Lora uncovers some family secrets that will launch readers into the next book, The Bargain. While The Bargain follows some of the original characters, its central theme is the friendship between an older woman and her young friend.

Nancy Dandridge Patterson, a native Tate Countian, retired after a 37-year career in broadcasting and public relations. She began her career in Mississippi's small-market radio in Holly Springs, Greenwood, and Hernando before joining the staff at Northwest Mississippi Community College's NPR-affiliate station WNJC where she served as manager.
When the station closed in 1988, she transferred to the college's Public Relations Department. Her 33-year career at the college ended in 2010 after she had served for five years as director of Public Relations.
Since retirement, she fulfilled a life-long goal of learning to quilt. She has also written for area newspapers, DeSoto Magazine and Hills and Harvest magazine.
She obtained a bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts, with emphasis in English, History, Sociology, and Journalism.
Patterson ended a 13-year break from horseback riding in 2015 when she began trail riding with her friends. She and her friends ride at local state parks in Mississippi and Tennessee and in the Arkansas Ozark Mountains.
She and her husband, Howard, are the parents of three grown children and four grandchildren. They live on family farmland in North Mississippi.
